The choice of substrate for growing cannabis indoors and outdoors is very important, as it allows us to know whether we should fertilise a lot, a little or not at all.
Substrate for cannabis growing
Cannabis cultivation offers several substrate options to suit the specific needs of each grower. Here is an overview of some of the most common substrates and their characteristics:
Soil
Soil is one of the most commonly used substrates for growing cannabis. It provides a nutritious and stable base for plant roots. Quality soil contains a balanced mix of nutrients and retains moisture well. It is suitable for beginner growers and offers a more natural and organic experience.
You will find soil for growing cannabis plants from different brands, such as BioBizz, Canna and BioCanna, Plagron, Atami, among others.
Coconut fibre
Coconut fibre is a popular substrate, especially among growers looking for a more sustainable alternative. This material derived from coconut husks is lightweight, well-drained and retains moisture efficiently. Coconut fibre allows for greater irrigation control and promotes healthy root development.
At themariashop we offer Cocomix by BioBizz, among other brands.
Rockwool
Rockwool is a popular inert substrate for hydroponics. It is a material derived from molten volcanic rock that has been converted into an absorbent fibre. Rockwool provides excellent drainage and oxygenation of the roots, and allows precise control of nutrients and irrigation. It is commonly used in soilless growing systems.
Arlite
Arlite, also known as expanded clay, is a lightweight, inert substrate. It is composed of expanded clay pellets that provide excellent drainage and air retention. Arlite is used in hydroponic and aeroponic systems, allowing rapid root growth and good nutrient uptake.
Each substrate has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on the grower’s preferences and the specific growing conditions. It is important to consider factors such as level of experience, cultivation system used and availability of resources before making a decision.
Remember that successful cannabis cultivation depends not only on the substrate used, but also on other important factors such as adequate watering, lighting, ventilation and nutrient supply. It is advisable to research and experiment to find the substrate and growing approach that best suits your needs and goals.
